School Memoirs

The Polish Supplementary School of the United Poles in America (Z.P.A.) is the pride of our organization and Polonia. It was established in 1953 on the first anniversary of the Z.P.A.'s creation by its active members for whom patriotism and responsibility for the future of the Polish children and youth in the United States were the top priorities. The school was to ensure education in the Polish language, history, traditions and customs. For its founders, it was to represent the Z.P.A. externally, and through this, showcase its activities towards maintaining Polish traditions. Despite the difficulties such as the lack of financial resources and unavailability of the suitable premises, the school's existence was considered a national legacy.

Looking back, our school looked so much different than now. Its organizational and educational model changed every year. From a small, 20-person group lead by a teacher and principal in one person, over the years, it has transformed completely into a dynamic, prestigious school. During the first years of its existence, there was no grade division. Regardless of their age, all children studied together. The requirements for children were different. Reciting a poem, knowing songs and alphabet were enough to satisfy the parents. With time, because of the growing number of children and their varied abilities, grade levels were introduced. Today, our school has 180 students and is located in the St. Stanislaus Kostka Church Catholic School in Sayreville, NJ. We have 12 qualified teachers with solid educational backgrounds and a music teacher who teaches music to individual grades. A few years ago, the preschool and kindergarten grades were added. These early grades prepare children for the first-grade education in our school. School has all sorts of activities and competitions. Children who perform well are recognized by their teachers. In addition, excellent students receive a reward of $50 from the United Poles Federal Credit Union. We are very grateful to the Board of Directors for all their financial support, subsidizing the book purchases for the students and approving all our requests. We also receive help from the United Poles in America Enterprises Inc. that supports us both financially and logistically by making its premises in Perth Amboy available to school when needed.

Our students represent our organization during various Polonia events, everywhere where our Polish heritage should be celebrated. For instance, we participate in the Pulaski Parade in New York City, the Independence Day, the Poland's May 3rd Constitution, Swieconka and Oplatek celebrations. Each event, organized by the United Poles in America, is showcasing the school. The financial help from the Z.P.A. allows children to benefit from a variety of attractions. Every year, the Board organizes school trips that bring children a lot of joy, but also educate them further. In December, the Z.P.A. invites children to the traditional Polish Christmas celebration with Saint Nicholas during which children receive gifts, and other events where the president and other Board members participate. This close cooperation between the Z.P.A. and the school is dictated by the teachers', the parents', and the current president's, John Klajn, engagement.

Last year's 55th anniversary of the school was the best occasion to thank and acknowledge the contributions of its founders: Hieronim Wyszynski who was the first president of the Z.P.A., also well-deserving late Feliks Bruks, consecutive presidents of the organization who continued the work of their predecessors such as the late T. Radlinski, late M. Kijowski, late. Z. Lenty, D. Wyszynska, W. Sosulski, Z. Kowalski, late J. Breef, F. Jess, M. Koprowicz, S. Wielowski, Z. Zelazowski as well as J.Klajn, the current president. We need to remember our first teachers: M. Dziadowicz, D. Grzankowska, J. Marszalek who, despite the difficulties, worked hard to preserve the school.

Lastly, I wish the memories of our past and current teachers who used to and continue to care about educating the Polish youth in the spirit of respect for the Polish culture last forever. We thank them for sharing their knowledge about Poland and helping with learning the Polish language. It is impossible to list all principals, teachers, caretakers as well as involved parents. They all deserve special recognition. Without their help the school would no longer exist.
